Denim Care Guide
JAPANESE DENIM CARE
Nanton& Japanese denim is selected for its character, structure and ability to evolve with wear. Variations in colour, texture and fading are intentional qualities of the fabric and will make each garment increasingly individual over time.
01. WASH LESS, WEAR MORE
Japanese denim does not need to be washed after every wear.
Allow your denim to air naturally between wears and spot-clean only when necessary. Less frequent washing helps preserve the depth of the indigo and allows the fabric to develop a more personal pattern of fading.
When a full wash becomes necessary, always refer to the care instructions inside the garment.
02. EXPECT INDIGO TRANSFER
Deep indigo denim may naturally release colour, particularly when new.
Take care when wearing your denim against light-coloured clothing, footwear, upholstery and accessories. Indigo transfer is an inherent characteristic of traditionally dyed denim and will gradually diminish with wear and washing.
03. WASH WITH CARE
When washing is required, turn the garment inside out and wash separately in cold water using a small amount of mild detergent.
Avoid bleach, optical brighteners and aggressive stain treatments.
For the greatest control over colour loss and abrasion, hand washing is preferred. If machine washing is permitted by the garment's care label, select a gentle cycle and wash with similarly dark colours.
04. NEVER TUMBLE DRY
Allow Japanese denim to air-dry naturally.
Reshape the garment while damp and hang it away from direct sunlight and heat. Tumble drying can encourage shrinkage, alter the fit and accelerate colour loss.
Do not store until completely dry.
05. TREAT STAINS GENTLY
For small spills, blot gently with a clean, absorbent cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing, which can remove indigo from the surface and create an unintended light area.
Do not apply bleach or concentrated stain remover directly to the denim.
For significant stains, consult a professional cleaner experienced with premium or raw denim.
06. LET THE DENIM EVOLVE
Creasing, whiskering, fading and subtle variations in colour are part of the character of Japanese denim.
Areas exposed to greater movement and friction will naturally lighten first. Rather than trying to maintain a perfectly uniform surface, allow the garment to develop its own patina.
A NOTE ON RAW DENIM
Raw and minimally washed denim may feel structured when new. With wear, the fabric will soften and begin to conform to the body.
The resulting changes in colour, texture and handle are not imperfections. They are part of the material's evolution—and part of what makes each Nanton& denim garment unique.
